Peter Lund, 1845-1907

Peter Lund

Peter Lund was born on 3 December 1845 in Tryde, Sweden. He was the second of five children born to Jons Lundin and Bengta Nilsson. He married Anna Martensdotter on 11 April 1871 in Scona (Skane?), Sweden. She was the daughter of Marten Lantz and Christina Nordquist. Anna was born on 22 December 1850 in Tranas, Sweden, and died on 28 April 1931 in Sidney Twp., Montcalm Co., Michigan.

Peter was known in Sweden as Per Jonsson Lundin and reportedly changed his name from Per to Peter when he became a blacksmith. According to a biographical sketch of his son, Nels, Peter was "an expert machinist and specifically a blacksmith by trade" (the 1884 Michigan census and the 1900 federal census both report his occupation as farmer). Peter and Anna had at least two children in Sweden (Nels and Martin) before they immigrated from Malmo, Sweden, to the U.S. in 1881. "Per Lundon, 35; Ann, 30; Nils, 4; and Martin, 2" arrived in New York on 21 August 1881 aboard the steamship S.S. Erin (photo courtesy of

They probably came directly to Sheridan, Montcalm Co., Michigan, which is where Peter's brother, John, had settled after he immigrated in 1874. Peter purchased a 40 acre farm northwest of Sheridan in Sidney Twp., Montcalm Co., in 1894 (it is in section 23 and labled "Peter Lunn" on this 1897 plat map of Sidney Twp.):

In addition to farming Peter operated a blacksmith shop located on his farm (according to his granddaughter, Anna Lund Adams, it was located on the east side of his driveway down by the road). Peter died at the age of 62 on 8 December 1907 in Sidney Twp. He (and many members of his family) was buried in Evergreen Cemetery east of Sheridan:
