Myron C. Adams, 1854-1913

Myron Adams

Myron C. "Mac" Adams was born on 21 December 1854 in Pennsylvania and was the 6th of 7 children born to Jonas and Lucy (Booth) Adams. He is listed with his family in the 1860 census of Beaver Twp., Crawford Co., Pennsylvania (he is listed as McIntyre in that census, perhaps because he was sometimes referred to as "Mac" due to his initials "M.C.", but nearly all other records refer to him as Myron C.). He was listed as 6 years old on this census which is consistent with a birth date (21 December 1854) provided on a family Bible, although the 1900, 1910, and his death record suggest he was born in 1856. He has not been found during the 1870 nor the 1880 census. He married Alice A. Herrig on 25 September 1884 at McBride, Montcalm Co., Michigan (according to divorce records - no marriage records have been found at the court house). This photo of him with Alice is believed to be their wedding photo from that time (photo from Roberta Longmire):

Myron and Alice had a total of eight children (according to the 1910 census, divorce records dated 1912, and Alice's obituary), but only seven names are known (only five lived to adulthood and only one survived Alice). They are Arthur Frederick Adams, 1886-1918; Alvin Adams, 1888-1889; Perry Adams, 1890-1917; Glenn Oscar Adams, 1892-1926; Pearl May Adams, 1896-1916; Ruby May Adams, 1900-1900; and Elmer Henry Adams, 1903-1980. Myron and family moved a number of times with many of the children born in Montcalm County and many in Ionia County. They apparently never owned land but moved around while he worked as a farm laborer. During the 1900 census they were living in Crystal Twp., Montcalm Co. Below is the only other known photo of Myron, which was taken about 1898 in Carson City, Montcalm Co. (the children between Myron and Alice are Perry and Pearl, with Fred standing behind, and Glenn sitting in front. The child in the insert is not known but may be Elmer or one of their children who died young).

Myron C. Adams family in 1898

By 1906 they were living at Smyrna in Ionia County (according to probate records of Alice's brother), and by 1910 Myron and family had moved to Evart, Osceola Co., Michigan. Divorce papers filed in March of 1912 in Osceola Co. indicate that Myron and Alice had lived together until February of 1910 when he deserted the family. Indeed, the April 1910 census shows Alice and their children living in Evart, while Myron was living at Grand Ledge in Eaton County (he was boarding with the George Hall family -- no apparent relation). After divorce Alice remarried in September of 1912. Myron moved back to Osceola County by 1913 which is where he died on the 9th of May. He was buried in the Osceola County Poor Farm Cemetery in Sylvan Twp.
