Margaret Elizabeth (Peters) Herring, 1828-1895
              (Peters) Herring and Frederick

Margaret Elizabeth Peters was born on 3 August 1828 in Strasbourg, France, and was the fourth of eight children born to John H. and Catherine Peters. At least two of her siblings were born in the city of Strasbourg so that is assumed where Margaret was born (John, Jr., was born there in 1820 according to his granddaughter, Bertha Peters Blakeman: and George was born there in 1825 according to his obituary). Strasbourg is in the Alsace region of north-eastern France with the river Rhine as its eastern border, but over the years it shifted back and forth between France and Germany, which is why some records indicate the family was from Germany and others say France. Margaret (and family) immigrated to the U.S. in 1829 when she was one year old. They arrived in the port of New York from LeHavre, France, on the ship "Hewes" on 30 Oct 1829. The family was listed as: Hans Peters, 30, occupation - farmer; Catharine, 32, his wife; Hans, 8; Catharine, 7; George, 4; and Margaret, one. (Note that Hans is a German short form of the name "Johann", or in English "John"). John and Catherine were living in Albany Co., N.Y., by 1831, which is where their son, Nicholas, was born. By 1832 they had settled in Lewis Co., N.Y., where they farmed. The 1835 state census indicates they had two head of cattle, no horses, one sheep, and one hog. They are in the West Turin Twp. census of 1835, 1840, and 1850. Margaret married Frederick Godfrey/Godfried Herrig on 30 October 1851 in Verona Mills, Oneida Co., New York. The above photo was is presumeably taken around the time of their marriage. Below are two other photos of Margaret when she was older (the bottom photo was taken in Greenville, Mich., probably about 1880):

Margaret and Frederick had eight children between 1852 and 1867 all of them born in New York, probably in Oneida County. They moved to Montcalm Co., Michigan, in the early 1870's. In 1876 they bought 80 acres of land in section 25 of Sidney Twp., Montcalm Co. (a mile or so northeast of Sheridan), where they farmed and raised their children. Margaret was living with her daughter, Anna, in nearby Belding when she died on 9 November 1895. The death notice in the newspaper referred to her as "Elizabeth Harring" (this is the only reference to her as "Elizabeth" so it is not certain whether her middle name really was Elizabeth) while her tombstone (below) says "Margrett Herring". She was buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Greenville, Montcalm Co., Michigan.
