Isabelle Chapman (Richardson) Adair, 1886-1920
Isabelle Chapman Richardson was born on 14 Feb 1886 in Thetford Twp., Genesee Co., Michigan. She was the oldest of three children born to David and Margaret (Davidson) Richardson (her parents immigrated from Scotland shortly after they married). Below is Belle's baby picture taken in Flint, Mich.:
Some records refer to her as Isabella (which was her grandmother's name) but most simply refer to her as "Belle". She signed her name "Isabelle" in a high school text book in 1903 (below) so this is the spelling used here.
In 1898 when Belle was about 12 years old her parents moved from Thetford to Mayville, Michigan, where they stayed for about two years before moving to Flint. Belle would have graduated from high school in Flint about 1904. The 1905 Flint City Directory lists her as living with her parents and her occupation was a teacher. She reportedly taught at Atlas School near Goodrich (at that time the Atlas School was located on Gale Rd. just north of the Atlas Baptist Church). The 1907 directory lists her as a clerk for Hills Bros. Dry Goods Co. in Flint. Perhaps this is where she met Roland Adair, whom she married on 24 Feb 1908 in Flint. They had 4 children between 1909 and 1916. Below is a photo of Belle (left); her sister, Mary (center); her mother, Margaret (Davidson) Richardson; and her first child, Margaret Abigail Adair, who was born on 10 Sept 1909:
Below is another photo of Belle (on right) with her mother; her mother's father, William Davidson; and her daughter, Margaret:

Again, Belle and Roland had four children (the youngest died at just a week old) all born in Flint, Mich.: Margaret Abigail Adair, b. 10 Sept 1909; Micah Robert Adair, b. 9 Aug 1912; Anna Graham Adair, b. 14 Dec 1914; and Roland Raymond Adair, Jr., b. 2 Sept 1916. Below is a photo of Belle with her daughters Margaret and Anna (on Belle's lap) with Belle's sister, Mary (glasses):
The above photo was apparently taken shortly before Belle died because Anna was only five years old when her mother died of pneumonia at 34 years of age on 9 April 1920 in Flint. She was buried in Thetford Cemetery.
