Eliza A. (Johnson) Haysmer, 1842-1909

Elizabeth
              Johnson Haysmer, 1842-1909

Elizabeth A.
              Johnson Haysmer

Eliza A. Johnson was born on 7 April 1842 in Brandon, Vermont, the daughter of Philander and Eliza (Jennings) Johnson. According to Eliza's obituary, "Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, having died, she came at a very early age, with her adopted parents to Michigan and settled in Ronald township, Ionia Co. There her girlhood days were spent..." Eliza's granddaughter, Mrs. Beatrice Peterson, heard that Eliza had moved from Vermont to Charlotte, Mich., with the "Cary family", but this has not been verified. Also, Eliza has never been located in the 1850 census. She is listed in the 1860 census in Ronald Twp., Ionia Co., Mich., while working as a domestic servant in the John Dickerson household. Working in this same household as a farm laborer was John Haysmer, whom Eliza married the following month on 11 July 1860 in nearby Bushnell Twp. (note that John Dickerson was a witness to the marriage). Eliza's obituary continues, "At the age of 18 she was married to John Haysmer, who had a home prepared for her in Bushnell township Montcalm Co. She and Mr. Haysmer built a beautiful home here and enjoyed it together until Mr. Haysmer's death 9 years ago. Ten children were born to them; 7 of whom survive: Mrs. Monger, of Ionia, Ed Haysmer, Will Haysmer, Mrs. Pitcher, of Sheridan, Wesley Haysmer, Archie Haysmer, and Mrs. Will Balderson, who are living near the old home..." Actually, they had eleven children born between 1861 and 1885: Clara, Edward, William, Arthur, Earl, Lillie, Grace, Henry, Bert, Archie, and Pearl. Two of them had died by the age of two. The family is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census (John died in January 1900 just prior to the 1900 census).

After John died Elizabeth married Albert Cooper on 5 January 1902 in nearby Palo, Ionia Co. (it is this marriage record of Eliza and Albert which lists her parents as "Philander Johnson" and " Eliza Jennings" but nothing else is known of them). Albert was born in March 1836 in the state of New York and died some time after 1920 (he is listed in the 1920 census of Fairplains Twp., Montcalm Co.). Albert had been married twice before he married Eliza, and he married a fourth time shortly after Eliza died. Eliza died on 9 July 1909 in Bushnell Twp. and she was buried by her first husband, John Haysmer, in Mabie/Sunny Hill Cemetery in Bushnell Twp. Eliza's obituary continues, "She was married in 1902 to Mr. Cooper, who survives her. She died July 9 1909 at her home in Bushnell where she had resided 49 years. Mrs. Cooper was a woman of great energy and activity but she took time to cultivate her higher nature. She was ever considerate and thoughtful of others; her last act was in helping others. She was a member of the Adventist church the rites of which she kept faith fully. On her death the children have lost a wise counselor, the community a valued neighbor. Funeral services were held at the Adventist church in Bushnell on Sunday July 11, at 10:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. Owens, assisted by Rev. Manning, and burial was made in the Mabie cemetery."
